Why didn't the Lord poke someone to pick him up...

I absolutely loved the talk brother Hogg (pronounced like hoe) gave today in sacrament. He should be the poster boy for old time cowboys with a rough edge but gentle and sincere testimony. In only the way an old cowboy could he taught us some wonderful lessons while making us chuckle just a little also.

He lives on the highway out to Oakley about 5 miles out of Burley. So, about 18 miles from Oakley. He told of an association with a man that wasn't a member who referred to himself as one of the "others" not "non-member". Brother Hogg taught us that "non-member" is a word used my members but not by those outside of our church. Brother Hogg asked the man what he thought of the mormons that he has known during his life. How were they as people? The man said, "they are a close group that doesn't like or associate with outsiders". This confused brother Hogg until he really thought about it awhile.

One day he was outside doing chores when he noticed someone walking up the highway toward Burley. He thought, that young man has probably been rained on so I should give him a ride. So, as the young man approached he got in his truck and offered him a ride. The boy explained that he had left early that morning and had been walking for hours from Oakley. Brother Hogg wondered how it was that a 19 year old boy carrying a piece of luggage would be able to walk 18 miles on a busy highway in a mormon town without the Lord "poking" someone to inspire them to pick him up. Surely, some had passed him coming and going he had been walking so long.

He then understood why his "non-mormon" acquaintence saw mormons as not wanting to associate with "others".

Brother Hogg had heard of a poor family that moved into a mormon neighborhood. They were double poor but yet they tried to help themselves. They walked roads to find cans for money. However, they were in much need. Some of the mormon neighbors said, "if we don't help them maybe they will move". They didn't. After time their water pump went down. The same neighbors celebrated because they felt it would force them to move. However, one of the "other" neighbors came to their aid and repaired their well for them.

Brother Hogg then went on to tell us that he has come to know the difference between the things that are his and the things that are the Lords. His farm and the house on it are not his... they are the Lords. His truck is not his, it is the Lords. One day there will be a fire and those things will be burned up. What is his is his testimony and his relationship with his wife. Those things he will still be able to have once everything else is burned up. He knows his wife is a good woman and she isn't going to be burned up so his plan is to stick as close by her as he can!

I thoroughly enjoyed brother Hoggs talk today. I hope you have caught a glimpse of what it offered even though you did not get the privilege of hearing it from a humble rough old cowboy.

Thank you brother Hogg for sharing your wisdom.

Awesome day in Twin

I had a great day Saturday. It started with a 2 1/2 hour practice with the boys and I just made it home in time to quickly shave and shower (cutting my face) so Wendy, Brit and I could hurry to the Temple for Brandon and Ivy's sealing. Brandon is my brother Dave's 2nd son. He baptized Ivy just over a year ago. They are very happy together.

We waited for quite some time in the Celestial room and I completely enjoyed the peace and serenity in such a beatiful setting. It was wonderful to see some of the family but it is impossible to be there without missing the those that couldn't make it. They looked amazingly happy and I am proud of my nephew for working toward this appropriate accomplishment.

Afterward, Wendy, Brit and I went Christmas shopping. I hate shopping but love my family so it works out. We accomplished quite a lot and then finished it off with a cold stone!

Great day.

Coach Landrum

I like the sound of that. My 3 older brothers are all coaches also. 2 high school level and one competition leagues. I guess there must be something in our upbringing that lends to an intrigue.

I have had 2 early morning tryout practices. Very impressed with the boys. They are good kids and hard workers. There are definitely some that do not have the skills or coordination yet. I have 19 that are trying out. We can put jerseys on 13. I hate the thought of cutting a boy that has his heart set on going for it. As a sophomore I moved to a much bigger school and was 100% intimidated but so wanted to play. Without knowing anyone very well on shaky knees I convinced myself to go to open gym where the coach could watch you. He embarassed me and handled me totally wrong for what I particularly needed at the time. That has made me VERY sensitive to each boy. After wrestless nights I came up with a plan and presented it to the Varsity coach. I was so pleased that he agreed with my thinking.

I will set a fixed team of 10 players instead of 13 and cuts. I will then allow any boy that will commit himself to hard practice with the "chance" to suit up and play occassionally to be on the team. Based on effort and attitude 3 boys will suit up for each game from the remaining 9. Each boy that dedicates himself to working hard and showing to practice will play in at least 1 game. The fixed squad will not have a secure position. If they slack and another boy earns their spot they will drop down.

I do not have to cut 1 boy. The ones that choose to still come to practice will show me that they truly want to be part of the team and that they have character.

I truly believe that 9th and 10th grade boys are very much in a developmental stage and it is impossible to determine which may grown into amazing athletes. There will probably be a few from the practice squad that will end up starting Varsity as Seniors. That will be a huge payoff for me! The JV team's purpose is to prepare boys to fill roles on the Varsity team. Nothing will please me more than to bring a boy from a hesitant awkward freshman that would have likely been cut to contributing huge!!!

Next Wednesday is our first game after 7 days of practice! Woo Whoooo.

As honest as it gets...

OK. I am going to try to be as honest as possible because this subject is one that I feel does not get enough discussion and the outcome of that unfortunate fact is destruction.

It is important for me to first recognize and then admit that I am somewhat extreme in my views and know that it is unreasonable to expect others to feel as I do. There are reasons for my extremism and unfortunately, some are due to difficult life experiences that I regret and desperately wish would have been avoided.

As a boy innapropriate TV, magazines, movies, experiences and dialogue were way too accessible and part of my life. Unfortunately, I have vivid memories and images that are up to 35 years old. Not as an excuse but as a reality those experiences led to regrets. As I have grown reflection is both good and bad. Good in that I have been able to piece the puzzle at least somewhat together. I have no question in my mind that there is a direct correlation between my exposure to innapropriate circumstances and material and challenges that faced me in life where I performed less than satisfactory.

These reflections and realizations have caused an interesting reaction. I have become bitter toward societies casual acceptance to innapropriate things.

TV
Movies
Magazines - just notice the magazines at the check out stands in Walmart... and then protest!
Dress
Unhealthy Relationships
Selfishness
etc...

My wife has to deal with my extremism. I feel a sense of having to make up for my lack of awareness and focus for so many years. For well over a decade now I have voiced my objections. I am here to tell you that even one voice can make a difference. In Utah a few years ago I asked for the manager at Walmart. I explained my opposition and disappointment (calmly) to the magazines on the check out stand. It didn't take much effort to select a few magazines to represent my case. Not just sexually explicit photos but titles... I asked them to help me protect my children from such innapropriate things by not exposing them to it in their check out stands. "I recognize other people right to choose to find and read these things but by placing it in your stands it removes my right to protect my family from it unless I stop shopping here". The manager was very understanding and told me that she had my very thoughts and appreciated a customer documenting it". The next time I visited they had hard plastic covers on the magazines.

My latest objection comes due to a very difficult situation. My 12 year old daughter is invited tonight to a birthday party. After the party the group of girls are "excited" to go see new moon.

I will admit that I was in objection to my family watching this mostly due to what I perceive as innapropriate sexual exploitation. I believe that it is innapropriate for a developed man (an 8 year old boy isn't typically found sexually exciting by the opposite sex) to be virtually unclothed. If you were to ask most women what they find sexually interesting in a man they will probably list a bare chest, muscles or nice stomach somewhere on their list (right after a nice smile). So, for hollywood to capitolize on this fact by removing actors shirts whenever possible to captivate and stimulate women/girls is irresponsible and wrong. I hope that my extreme stand on this does not undermine the fact... exploiting and actor or actress for sexually stimluating material just to draw an audience and make money is morally wrong. To acceptingly watch it is worse (in my opinion).

However, getting past my initial primary objection I came to realize that I was missing an even more damaging aspect of this movie. The message that it sends to both teenage girls and adult women is tragic. The main female character is obsessed with Edward. She must have him. If she can't her entire world will crumble. She will do anything to have him. She will sacrifice family, friends and even her soul to have him. In fact, she will attempt suicide if she can't have him. That is, until her heart heals some and she becomes infactuated with a shirtless young man that has spent a year of his life (since the last movie) dedicating himself to becoming a sex symbol (which the movie capitolizes on). He and his fellow warewolves spend more time in the movie mostly naked for the purpose of sexually intriguing young girls and married women. But, as that physical attraction wares off she then goes back to her original love.

Anyway, my opinion is that this movie and most are completely innapropriate. I regret having been exposed to such things when I grew up and hope to be able to help my children avoid the same mistakes by learning form my mistakes. I do not endorse that they watch this movie that som many, including good members of the church, find so acceptable. That a mormom woman wrote the novels does not justify the content. It just makes it that much more tragic.

Society is very accepting. That does not qualify appropriateness.

Ametuer at the keyboard...

I do not know structure, rules, etc. I simply write feelings and thoughts. So, forgive the lack of polish. I assume you will all connect the symbolism I tried to use to a much more significant reality. I hope to find in the future that I am not as guilty.

Worth
by Mike Landrum

I love to face upward on moonless nights.
On other nights Ursa Major is easily found.
But on the right night my vision greatly improves.

There are those that stand out and shine bright.
Others go unnoticed. I, too, am guilty.
Hipparchus may not have even noticed them.

However, on those nights I see them.
They shine so soft and faint.
What, really, is their worth?

What would happen without their light?
Would the few brightest do the job?
I hope I don’t ever have to find out.

From now on I am going to try.
Try to discover one I failed to notice before.
That one will have worth in my eyes.

Scott L,

I really want to successfully use MUSE but have failed with every attempt! I know, I am thick. I prefer to consider it creatively challenged. Once I go to the site I cannot find how to post an entree. I know you emailed what to you seemed simple instructions but I failed over and over. I just came from there and can read others posts but played around for 20 minutes with no success determining how to post. So, it isn't due to lack of desire or effort.

A little something to put things in perspective...

After a forest fire in Yellowstone National Park , forest rangers began their trek up a mountain to assess the inferno's damage. One ranger found a bird literally petrified in ashes, perched statuesquely on the ground at the base of a tree. Somewhat sickened by the eerie sight, he knocked over the bird with a stick. When he gently struck it, three tiny chicks scurried from under their dead mother's wings. The loving mother, keenly aware of impending disaster, had carried her offspring to the base of the tree and had gathered them under her wings, instinctively knowing that the toxic smoke would rise. She could have flown to safety but had refused to abandon her babies. Then the blaze had arrived and the heat had scorched her small bo dy, the mother had remained steadfast ...because she had been willing to die, so those under the cover of her wings would live.

What would you do for your child?

'He will cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you will find refuge.' (Psalm 91:4) Being loved this much should make a difference in your life. Remember the One who loves you, and then be different because of it

Coach...

I went to UVSC for 2 years starting when I was 30. I studied classes that would allow me to prepare for the secondary ed courses at BYU. I planned to teach history/health and coach basketball. My true passion laid in the plans to coach. After being accepted at BYU and enrolled for classes my life took another course and 4 days away from starting at BYU I moved on. Providing for my family then took priority. 14 years later I am now in a secure job that offers me flexibility especially in the winter months.

A few weeks ago I was approached by Oakley High School because I had mentioned to some friends about my interest in eventually coaching basketball. As it works out, I am now the JV boys basketball coach (9th/10th grade) for Oakley High. I am extremely excited about it. But, now that it has happened I am also VERY much finding myself feeling inadequate. I have loved basketball always and have played it a lot. But, the last organized and coached ball I played was in 1979 when I was 15. Other than our Explorer team that won 2nd place in nationals in 1983. But, that was coached by our Explorer leader. Pretty much street ball with some structure.

To properly coach a high school level team you must know defenses (man-man; 3-2 zone; 1-2-2 zone; 1-3-1 zone; 2-2-1 press; 3-1-1 press; 1-3-1 press, etc....) and offense (just as many options). You also must understand many many rules and practice drills and then organize all of this with 12 teenage boys to help them focus, work hard and succeed.

Oh boy, am I excited! Pray for me. Pray for the boys.

Woah...

OK, I had no idea what that experience would be like! Having my little girl sit across from me with a boys hand nervously placed on her knee and her clinging to it like she is scared to let go was crazy enough. But, then to have every crazy thought crash through my mind as to what they needed to tell us... yep, I pretty much knew. But, I guess my mind was crashing through thoughts in an attempt to find another possibility. None came. I knew what was about to happen. So, I said, "Wait". Then, I went in and retrieved my gun belt which has dozens of shiny bullets exposed along with my revolver and strapped it on. I then walked back in and said, "you were saying..."

I genuinely think he wondered whether I would use it. After taking it off and sitting there sincerely I think the boy was too nervous to speak so Savanna finally started to. She said, "Dad, mom, Aaron and I are engaged".

OK, here is where I couldn't have ever come close to grasping the intensity of the experience that was about to occur until living it.

I had every emotion possible flood my body at once. While feeling complete excitement for my little girl especially by seeing how happy and in love she appeared to be I also felt fear, confusion, a sense of wanting to be protective and many many others things. All at the exact same time. Very fascinating moment. I have to do this 4 more times?!

After a moment of Savanna explaining her feelings it appeared he was about to speak. So, I said, "Aaron, it is fine, take a deep breath".

My future son-in-law then went on to say the perfect words to let me know he cherishes my little girl and has only the best of intentions to make her happy. I appreciate him doing so.

We welcome him into our family with open arms and thank him for making Banna so happy. Congratulations Banna, we love you.

#5

So, my boot was to be counted (number 4) and now number 5 has happened. This morning as the girls were getting ready they snapped the shower head off. It had a pivot point to allow it to be adjusted up or down but now it is broken.

So, now all I have to do is buy new boots, replace the shower head, overcome the flu (not fun) and wait to see what #6 is.

The good thing about laying in bed for 2 days is I have loved watching the conference talks again. What amazing disciples and amazing messages.

Sniff sniff...

Wednesday night I played church basketball and had our Elder's Quorum President throw his forearm into my face on purpose out of frustration. The result, a 2nd broken nose playing church basketball. The first was an elbow during a rebound (that time not intentional). I dind't even have the luck to have it break from the other side to maybe balance it out. Instead, it was pushed over the same way so when I quit filling the bathroom sink with blood I was able to focus through blurry eyes and realize my nose was closer to my cheek bone than the center of my face. So, I did what anyone would do, I grabbed it and after a few cracks and pops it was closer to where it is supposed to be. One of the guys was with me and his knees buckled. He said, "dude, how did you do that? You are the toughest guy I have ever known".

In reality, I am the biggest wimp he knows because I had a clear thought that if I left it there and went to the doctor the pain would be much less and he would then adjust it which would cause the intense pain all over again! So, while the pain was clear and present I felt it best to get it over with. So, I gritted my jaws together and molded my nose back into place. I then put ice on it for over an hour. The aggressor apologized as best he could and it was enough for me that he realized he lost control and it resulted in a bad outcome. Hey, anything to help a fellow brother overcome his weaknesses...

Then, on top of it all... I came down with the flu yesterday and feel like a house fell on me! I guess I will have to be lazy and lay in bed all day to recover!

And to think I was wondering what #3 was going to be! 2 weeks ago the starter in our car went out. I bought a new one and replaced it. Then, a week ago our kitchen faucet broke and I had to buy a new one and replace it. I thought the sole of my boot busting in half was #3 but it now appears that just simply wasn't significant enough to be counted. The nose has it.

Counting the boot and the flu maybe I am supposed to have 6 in a row or something. I will keep you posted if another tragedy or complication creeps in next week.

Living vicariously

I spent the entire day hiking a hillside of juniper trees (that I am allergic to) locating over 50 deer in the effort. I am very selective so I didn't shoot any of them. I did however want to shoot the hunter that was in full camaflouge during the rifle hunt (hunter orange, duh). A friends 14 year old boy was along. His first hunt. His dads ankle gave out so I finished the hunt with his boy. We hiked 2 miles over 3 hours and it finally paid off. He had shot at 5 other deer during the day with no success. In fairness, his excitement caused him jitters and he was using open sites on a 30-30. Simply put, anyone would need skill to hit a target further than 100 yards with such a gun let alone a 14 year old boy on his first hunt. Just as we were heading to the truck we spotted 12 deer on the edge of a field at the bottom of a MOUNTAIN we were 90% done climbing. So, we did what any avid hunter would and turned around and headed down. My feet were really aching. We watched them enter a strip of junipers surrounded by fields. So, we entered the lower section of it and slowly worked our way in. We found his prize after 10 minutes and with a great shot he bagged his first deer. The excitement was easily detected. That boy will not forget this day and I feel fortunate to have been part of it. I don't think I will forget it either. He was very grateful. I was very impressed.

Elder Holland is amazing...

I have never heard a stronger testimony of the Book of Mormon and appreciated the directness, intensity and strength of spirit that he used. I had no question of the divinity of the book but without doubt instantly increased in testimony upon hearing his talk. I will re-visit it many times in the years to come. I also enjoyed the balance of conference and feel blessed to have the freedom that allows for such a miracle.

Go check what that noise is...

So, this morning I awoke at 4:00 am like I do some mornings. Others it is 2 or 3. Others it is 6:00. Anyway, I rolled over and nestled up to Wendy feeling totally peaceful and happy. I kissed her neck and gently gave her a hug. I couldn't see it but I "felt" her smile. The house was still asleep because there was absolutely no noise except the ticking of the clock. And, that other noise!

I listened for awhile and was wondering what the heck that steady faint beat could be. Wendy finally said, "go check what that noise is... I have to go outside to exercise soon". So, I got up and wandered the house to see if I could hear it more clearly. No noise. As I was about to go outside something caught my eye out our front window. At 4:00 am it is quite dark outside especially with a fingernail clipping of a moon so I couldn't tell what it was. When I walked up to the window I quickly realized we had had visitors at some point in the night. I laughed audibly. Wendy came to see what why.

We have caution tape wrapped around our car, up our walk to our front door as if our house was a crime scene (actually, it is, trespassing). Some young man visited Kings to buy a box of sidewalk chalk and then displayed his artistic ability on our walkway. So, as I go out and inspect things more clearly I read "Garyn... I am dying to take you to homecoming... Garyn" in different chalk colors. Over near the car on the driveway there is a crime scene body outline with a boys name written next to it.

Now, here is the rest of the story. For weeks Garyn has slightly hinted at the fact that a certain boy might ask her to homecoming. I think she was pleased at the thought. So a few days ago she began telling us that he asked someone else. However, he gave very confusing signals because he has shown a lot of interest in Garyn including texting her, asking her opinion of what would be fun for a day date, how he should ask the girl, etc. So, this game comes to a head yesterday when he announces that he asked another girl to homecoming. Garyn handled it well on the outside but a dad knows... It didn't help that when he told her that he asked another girl GJ asked how he asked her... he said that he didn't want to tell her. She was not pleased and thought he was being stupid. So did I . Now it makes total sense.

Some of you may have noticed her facebook posting about feeling depressed yesterday. Hmmm. I wonder why? So, I got up and walked Wendy to the church to teach her class (since her car was part of a crime scene) and am now about to go for a walk. By the way, the stars are really bright right now so I am going to love this country mile walk. I can't wait to get back and wake GJ up to see her depression instantly disappear! I assure you her smile will be bigger and brighter than the sliver moon over Declo that I saw this morning.

So, how should she answer, "I would love to live it up with you at homecoming"? Other ideas? She will be asking.

Major style and creative points for this young man! He got her GOOD! Honestly, he got me good too... I wanted to thump him for playing mind games with my little girl. He has sufficiently made up for it.

Oh, the noise was the caution tape tied to our screen door. Suttle movement as the wind softly blew.

stake conference joke...

Yep, this joke was told at our Stake Conference by the Boise Idaho Mission President.

A husband and wife saved for years to be able to retire at the age of 65. Just as they did their luck really improved. They found a bottle and as luck would have it when they rubbed it a Genie appeared and granted them 2 wishes. The wife immediately said, "I have always wished I could go to Hawaii". Poof, they found themselves in Hawaii. The husband looked around at all the surroundings and said, "I wish my wife was 20 years younger than me". Poof, he found himself 85.

As this was told the elderly lady sitting next to Wendy gasped, leaned over to Wendy and said, "it serves him right..."

Wednesday, September 2, 2009

I agree... but,

I agree with the following outlook from this lady but would clarify that being healthy is critically important so you are around to enjoy that occassional ice cream with your kids/grandkids/great grandkids....

So, other than that I thought this was great...

Recently, in large French city, a poster featuring a young, thin and tan woman appeared in the window of a gym. It said:
THIS SUMMER DO YOU WANT TO BE A MERMAID OR A WHALE? A middle aged woman, whose physical characteristics did not match those of the woman on the poster, responded publicly to the question posed by the gym. To Whom It May Concern: Whales are always surrounded by friends (dolphins, sea lions, curious humans). They have an active sex life, they get pregnant and have adorable baby whales. They have a wonderful time with dolphins stuffing themselves with shrimp. They play and swim in the seas, seeing wonderful places like Patagonia, the Barren Sea and the coral reefs of Polynesia. Whales are wonderful singers and have even recorded CDs. They are incredible creatures and virtually have no predators other than humans. They are loved, protected and admired by almost everyone in the world. Mermaids don't exist. If they did exist, they would be lining up outside the offices of Argentinean psychoanalysts due to identity crisis. Fish or human? They don't have a sex life because they kill men who get close to them not to mention how could they have sex? Therefore they do not have kids either. Not to mention who wants to get close to a girl who smells like a fish store? The choice is perfectly clear to me; I want to be a whale. P.S. We are in an age when media puts into our heads the idea that only skinny people are beautiful, but I prefer to enjoy an ice cream with my kids, a good dinner with a man who makes me shiver and a coffee with my friends. With time we gain weight because we accumulate so much information and wisdom in our heads that when there is no more room it distributes out to the rest of our bodies. So we aren't heavy, we are enormously cultured, educated and happy. Beginning today, when I look at my butt in the mirror I will think, "Good gosh, look how smart I am."

Some battles shouldn't have to be...

To battle the norm of society is one thing when teaching your children right from wrong. But, to have to battle "your own" is just simply too much!

My wonderful daughter returned from her mission 2 weeks ago. She has represented Christ and has lived a life in tune with being his disciple. She is sensitive to living closely in tune with the spirit and being obedient.

So, as I dropped her off in Provo last week to attend her 3rd year at BYU I did not expect her to face adversity. I expected her to feel safe, confident and excited. However, she quickly faced a difficult decision.

She applied to work in the same department as she did prior to her mission. It appeared her chances were very promising due to her past experience, exceptional work ethic and the fact that a good friend and old co-worker was the hiring supervisor. What a relief, obtaining work soon would be a relief and definite blessing. As hoped, she was contacted and told that she could have the job.

However, she faced a moral dilemma. She ultimately desired securing a job at the MTC teaching Tagalog. But, securing work there is no easy task and could take a long time. So, the sure job was the smart move but "what if I get offered a job at the MTC?"

Brit asked my opinion of what to do. I thought it out. I then gave her my advice. I felt that where she knew going in she was also pursuing employment at the MTC that it would be best to be forthright and let her friend/supervisor know that.

So, Brit did what I believe to be the professional and honest thing and notified BYU as to her intentions. The response she received was VERY discouraging. She was simply manipulated! She was told that if she wanted the job she would have to give a 1 year commitment or the job would go to another applicant. Keep in mind that the job was given to Britney just days earlier.

So, instead of having her professional and forthright integrity rewarded she was manipulated. What disappointment. Now, I believe it important to recognize that "people" work at BYU and are prone to mistakes just as anywhere but I am still discouraged.

So, should Brit have withheld information and increased her chances to have employment?

This I know, everything will work out for her due to her honesty and obedience. I will not be suprised to see her working at the MTC by the end of the month. They would be fortunate to have her.

I am proud of you for being sensitive to such matters Britney. And for much more.

Participating in the all skate.

I have to say amen to all the previous posts about the events last week and will maybe add a few of my thoughts.

Gaining self-mastery and knowledge is what our existence is greatly about. I witnessed 2 great examples of that this past week in Felicia chosing to take upon herself the name of Christ and covenant to follow him and Britney returning from a mission she immersed herself in with whole heart.

Felicia. I could not be more impressed with the genuine and sincere approach you took to finding truth. I know your testimony is now rock solid. The foundation you now have to begin a life of service and obedience is sure. You will contribute greatly in building the kingdom. You will influence many many of your brothers and sisters during your lifetime. You have influenced everyone in this family for the good and you will influence your immediate family in time. Thank you for making John so happy. We love you.

Britney. Thank you for being my teacher and for being such a wonderful daughter and disciple of Christ. You are an amazing example to not only your sisters but to everyone who is blessed to associate with you. Your maturity and composure spiritually assures you success in life and I cannot wait to see all that you will accomplish! I am very thankful for you.

Family. Thank you for everything. I think we all caught a glimpse of what true "joy" is. No worldly happiness can replace the experiences of last week in providing true happiness.

Tender moments...

Today would be McKaylee Brooke's 21st birthday. Having taken a job in Idaho I had to leave my sweetheart in Utah toward the end of her pregnancy. I left late Friday night August 5th to drive to Provo where she was staying with her sister Ginger. I had Britney with me. Around Snowville I became excessively tired around 1:00 am and pulled to the side of the road. I slept soundly as did Brit. A semi rocked the car and awoke me a few hours later. I continued my drive. As far as I knew I was driving down to take Wendy to a stress test the doctor had finally scheduled 9 days beyond the due date.

When I arrived at Scott and Ginger's home I found a note on the door that said that they had left for the hospital. I drove very fast to Payson where our doctor was. My emotions and senses where heightened. I was in fear I would be too late. Brit was in my arms and we were walking very fast. As we rounded the corner and looked down the long hallway I saw my brother Scott Livinston sitting in a chair with his head lowered as if tired. It was early morning so this didn't look out of place to me. As he looked up - his expression was lacking the "hurry up look" which gave me a false sense of comfort. I slowed my pace. But, as I got closer I realized there was more to his countenance than I first saw. It was then that I knew something was wrong. My thoughts immediately went to the fact that it might be Wendy. I said, "Scott, what's wrong... is it Wendy?" As he shook his head in a negative manner I fully realized that it was our long awaited 2nd baby girl. The sister to our sweet Brit. The new spirit we had anxiously prepared to have in our home. At that moment words were not necessary. I knew. I reacted as one would. The nurse looked me in the eye and said, "Mr. Landrum, you must be strong your wife needs you right now".

I gathered myself and entered the doorway just feet away. As I walked in I passed our baby girl wrapped in a blanket as I went to my wife's side. The next hours were very personal and I will never forget them. We were able to spend an hour in our room with McKaylee and then they took her.

The balance of the experience has unfolded over the 21 years that would have been our angel's life. I want to express some things about my emotions and feelings and feel it appropriate to do after all these years.

I became bitter toward the doctor due to his neglect. I was convinced that if we had another doctor things may have turned out differently. I became bitter toward God. I had a sense of entitlement due to having made what I thought were mostly proper decisions throughout life and felt betrayed. Why would you let this happen to me? I became bitter toward myself for not demanding the doctor do stress tests earlier... at the due date. Further, I had asked for the doctor to induce labor at the due date and allowed him to talk me out of it. Had I been more of a man and spoke my mind I might have saved her!?

To be honest, it took years to overcome many of the feelings and thoughts. I forgave myself last. The doctor was not worth wasting my emotions toward and I suprisingly found it easiest to forgive him. I felt comfort that if he was at fault that he would eventually be accountable. After a few years I came to the realization that my selfish resentment toward God was entirely backward and shameful. How could I shut out the 1 source of comfort and insight into my wife and I's tragedy? Without the love of God I could not have come to peace with such a difficult experience. To be honest, I am not sure that I have fully overcome the inward feelings that I had toward myself but do know that I have learned a great deal about myself in the process so far. I know that my Heavenly Father loves me and wants me to be happy.

Anyway. I felt it appropriate to share some of my feelings and thoughts with my family after all these years. You were all part of this with us. You hurt and cried at our loss and the felt the pain we were experiencing. It was your loss as well. I truly believe there were bonds of love created through the experience. We thank each of you for the strength you provided us at such a difficult time. I will never forget the image of our loved ones surrounding us as we said goodbye to her, together, as a family.

The circumstances did not allow for me to be there as Wendy went into labor. Ginger and Scott were there for her. In hindsight I realize the hand of God in the events. I know myself. God knows me. I could not have been in the room when it was discovered that she was gone. My vacancy caused Wendy to use her own strength. I would have complicated that and made it harder for her. However, I walked into the room minutes after she delivered McKaylee. One of the truths I have come to learn is that my loving Heavenly Father was in control of those events to protect my wife and I both from even further hurt. This was not coincidental. I admire and respect my wife for the rock that she is. I lean on her. I learn from her.

I have one very overdue and sincere appreciation to express. My brother Scott Livingston was there for my wife in a situation I could not be. He held her hand. He leant her strength. He comforted her. He blessed her. I will eternally be grateful and I know he fully comprehends my love for him and his wife for their service at that time. That is a bond that will not be lost.

After 21 years I still feel my daughter's place in our family. I know that she would have a little bit of each of my other girls in looks and spirit. Therefore, I believe I have caught glimpses of her. She is beautiful.

To make my sister Julie proud...

My sister Julie is probably one of the people that I know that can rival my competitive nature. Therefore, this post is dedicated to her.

Tonight we played a nail biter of a softball game. We actually jumped up on them by 10 runs in the first inning. Everyone on our team hit well. However, we spent the next 5 1/2 innings after that allowing them to catch up and go ahead by 3 runs in the top of the 7th. We were home so we were last at bat with a chance to go ahead for the win.

I was 5th in the line up. Our first two batters stayed composed and got decent hits and got on base. We then had a fly out. The 4th batter hit a great shot and allowed one of our guys to score. We were now down by 2 (19 to 17) with one out and 2 runners on. I will admit I was nervous as I walked to the plate but anyone that knows me understands that I live for moments like this. I want the ball for the buzzer winning shot. I want to be at bat in a crucial moment. A desire like this requires a willingness to be the goat as much as it allows you to be the hero! Risky business but a true competitor lives for it.

So. To this point I had gone 4 for 5 at bat. I was called out for stepping forward to far in my stride as I swung. A call I haven't seen in all the years I have played. Stepping on the plate maybe but too far forward? Come on, I have long legs. It would be one thing if they chalked the box but you could barely see the plate let alone a batters box. I was tempted to step back and swing way back (at least close to the umps nose) on my next at bat. I resisted the temptation. Boy do I have a little devil on one of my shoulders.

In came the pitch. I personally like first pitches. Most pitchers try to throw a perfect strike the first pitch due to most batters waiting for a 2nd pitch to hopefully go ahead in the count and put pressure on the pitcher. So, in comes a perfect flat strike. The kind I like. I lean slightly back on my right leg and push forward with it in motion as I swing the bat. The contact felt really good but it was heading straight at the left fielder as a line drive. It appeared to be hit perfectly for an easy catch without him even needing to move. But, as the ball approached him it seemed to pick up momentum. He started running back and jumped to catch it. It cleared his mit by inches.

I forgot all about my ham string and soar foot. Adrenaline took over. I ran the bases like I was 43 again. We went ahead and won 20 to 19. I thought my team was going to lift me over their heads by the energy they were giving off but instead they just surrounded and mauled me. A mauling I didn't mind one bit.

Fun. Then I came home and received my 2nd jump and hug of the day. I am going to bed with a smile.

Jump hug

I am the blessed father of a jump hug every night upon coming home. I come in through our back door and there stands Maddie waiting for me to place my computer and note book down on the kitchen table. Then, as she backs up into the kitchen for enough space to get a good run at me I position and brace. She grins and then runs and jumps as high as possible. I place my hands under her arms and lift so that she can wrap her legs around my waiste and her arms tightly around my neck. She squeezes and then gives me a pert little kiss on the cheek.

Truly the highlight of my day to this point with no contest!

And, as an added bonus my wonderful little nephews and neice are staying with us. My little buddy Dawson instantly clung to my leg and looked up at me with puppy dog eyes communicating a desire to be lifted for a good ol' neck hug of his own. It meant as much to me as it appeared to mean to him and therefore it was a mutually beneficial moment. We are without contest buddies. I am glad.

Difficult decisions...

We are faced with difficult decisions daily if not hourly. This one was taken very serious and had much thought contributed.

We have decided to hold the family reception for Britney in Utah instead of Burley. This is going to be more difficult for the Boise family members and we recognize the sacrifice to travel further especially if Molly is able to.

However, in order to most benefit Britney we decided to stay in Utah after we pick her up on Wednesday night at 9:30 pm at SL International. We hope all family that can will attend our exciting and tearful reception at the bottom of the escalator. We plan to be there by 9:00 pm. I would like to ask Scott Livingston to record the moment with his video skills and Amy with her photography skills. Please let me know if this is possible.

Thursday morning Brit will be released as a missionary. I am sure that will be a tender moment for her. She will not be alone.

We still plan to hold the family gathering Saturday evening. I will have better details in the future. Thank you for your understanding. This proves to be an amazing day for the family and we hope all are in attendance!!! Please go out of your way to open your schedules to allow attendance. It will not be the same with anyone missing. Special apologies to the Atlanta branch of the family. Your possible appearance is the most challenging by far. Did I mention video tape footage just in case...

Too old?

When do you recognize that you are too old to do certain things? I am not so sure that the answer is the same for everyone. I figure this is true because I am in an elite group of 5 or so guys my age in the entire Burley league that are still playing softball. Everyone else is young enough to be my kid!

I will say that I have fun. Maybe that is why I stick with it. However, I pay the price. I have a stress fracture in my left foot. Tuesday I pulled my ham string on my right leg. I barely recover each week before my next game. Yet, I still showed up last night to pitch and hobble to first base (my team needs me... ok, I need my team).

I figure if this guy can still suit up so can I! Go old-timers! (notice his shirt?) And hey, I am batting 560 (on base more than half the time) so why hang up the Kleats? I even made a diving catch a week ago that was remeniscent of what used to be! And, one game I hit 2 triples and a double (before the torn leg muscle that is). Now, I simply try to get a walk so I don't have to run. Pinch runner please...

What is better than 1 fishing buddy? "8"

Memories vary due to the unique perspective of each independant mind involved. As for me, I cherish every second when my children are involved. Now, I extend that to include my neices and nephews. I hope their memories are ones they will cherish as well. Even if I made them hold the fish on their finger for a picture!!!

Proof of Dawson's big catch!!! The one that got away.

The only thing more precious than the innocence of a child is when there are two...

Or, 4...

But, one will do just fine...

One sign of a great family is when the cousins grow up as best friends!

Sometimes we have to be compelled...

OK, years ago I got over allowing my pride to linger and get in the way of success. However, I have not gotten over the initial short term problems associated with it! Room for growth.

So, this morning I allowed a stupid issue to come between my wife and I. We had a rough morning (no, we are not perfect) and I left for work surrounded by a bad spirit (which I allowed). My mind was muddled. My attitude was pathetic.

A friend had asked to borrow my tandem bike to take his wife for a ride. I loaded it and headed toward his house. Half way there I realized my phone was missing. So, I turned around and headed home. Feeling like I did it was not the direction I wanted to be heading. Rounding the corner a mile from my home our tandem flew out of my truck and smashed the de-railer into the spokes along with some scratches. So, now my dark mood and bad attitude intensified. As I got home I saw my phone laying in the gravel to the side of where my truck had been parked. The phone fell out of my hip clip and my front tire ran it over as I backed out! My black mood and horrible attitude could not have gotten much worse!

As I drove down the road I thought, fight, overcome and humble yourself before something more tragic occurs to teach you the lesson you should already have learned years ago!!! It is crucial that our lives are in harmony and that we do nothing to purposefully disrupt clarity. If not, we will pay the price. In this case $119 for a new phone and $100 for bike repairs.

I am glad that when my mind is cluttered and caught up in selfish behavior the spirit finds it's way through to compell me to grow up. I am glad that I have a tolerant and patient wife that sees through my weaknesses to allow my strengths.

I called my wife and genuinely apologized for the morning and my actions.

So far, I have not been involved in any horrific accidents and the day appears to be moving in a much more positive direction. I am glad.

Snake and Fish. How are they connected?

The snake river produces some very nice fish! That's how. I enjoyed the first half of the day Saturday fishing below the dam in American Falls (1 hour from Burley). We drifted it in a boat. I did see some fishing the banks but I believe that fishing it like we did was more productive and even more fun!

I have never gone fishing that I didn't enjoy it. I have heard so many other poeple tell me they hate to fish and I just don't get it. I enjoy the water and have always found it magical. I love to think through where the fish might be and how to present the bait or lure to entice a possible strike! Although yesterday was a slow day on the snake we did catch more than other boats we saw. One by one everyone we asked said the same thing... "nope, no hits". I guess we should feel fortunate to have seen some success.

I even made it back home by 2:00 pm to attend Maddie Belle's ballet performance. I am glad too. She was wonderful.

Shawn, we have to go one of these days. I think you would really like this area.

Just for my dear little sister KJAE...

Let me give you hand... I spared you the split nail middle finger from when mom ironed it when I was a little boy just because I know you can only handle so much at one time. But, beware what the future might hold!!!

What is wrong with your toe?

Ok. I have received harrassment over and over as the years have passed about my big toe! I guess I have always seen it the way it is and have never known different so it never stands out to me. However, I now believe that it must be unique because of my experience last week.

I went in to have a physical and check up. While I was sitting there the doctor was looking down at his writing pad and making notes. I sat in quiet contemplation feeling anxiety like a prisoner awaiting to walk the long corridor to the electric chair. After a few awkward moments passed he looked up from his pad and focused in on my foot. He immediately said, "what's wrong with your toe?"

My reply, "Nothing, it is just abnormally large... see, the one on the other foot is just like it!" I think he wanted to ask if my parents were 1st cousins or something according to the look on his face.

I am sure my sisters are both loving this due to their consistant harrassment about my guiness book record big toes. I guess I am glad it isn't my nose that grew too large. At least my toe is primarily hidden by my sock!

Boosie on the loose...

Congrats Boosie! Yesterday, Savanna Lyn Landrum joined the ranks of her 2009 graduating class and received her diploma.

I would like to thank Grandpa and Grandma Anderson, Grandpa and Grandma Kuetterer and especially Uncle John for coming and supporting her. John, Wendy sure appreciates that out of all her siblings and mine you are 100% in supporting our girls so far for this momentous occasion. We both know it isn't easy to modify hectic schedules to do so.

Savanna, I hope you get to sleep in today after your "senior" bash. We love you and are proud of you! Watch out world, here comes Boosie!

(For those who don't know, Boosie is just one of her nick names. This one courtesy of Grandma Bonnie. Sanna Banna Bo Banna Be Bop ... Boosie. And, after 16 years it stuck!)

Augghhhh... little blood sucker!

Ok, I remember from when I was a boy that you should burn the end of the tick to make him "back out". I had also heard you could cover him with gel or vicks and he couldn't breath and would "back out".

But, after discovering one embedded in my leg the day after my camping trip I decided to research it on the internet before performing surgery. Glad I did. Both of the methods I knew are BAD. I guess if you burn him he simply throws up into your blood stream which is not what you want. He might end up backing out but he leaves a nasty little gift.

The proper way is to get blunt forceps (tweezers) and gently pull until he realeases. So, I did. Hopefully, I was able to get his head and mouth out. Just to be sure I performed minor surgery at the opening until I was confident his little parts were extracted with my layers of flesh. I would rather an open wound on my leg than a tick head floating around inside me. Yuck.
Happy to report I am now tick free and pretty confident tick part free. By the way, this time of year is optimal wood tick season. If you go to the mountains check yourself over really well afterward. I had a total of 7 that I found inside my shirt and on my neck. Only the one went undiscovered and later became embedded.

Just a swingin...

Well, Wendy and the older girls are going with me to Grouse Creek Utah tonight [45 minutes past Oakley (which is 30 minutes south of Burley {which is 2 hours east of Boise})]. Our stake is holding a barn dance and to make it as authentic as possible they found the most remote location possible. Anyone heard of Yost? It is even more remote than that.

So, we will be swing dancin tonight! Should be fun. And just to ensure my fun o meter is maxed out I get to stay overnight with my scouts. Should be great times.

What are you doing (for those of you who frequently blog) or what did you do for the big weekend (for you part timers)?

12 year old mastermind...

I am thrilled to be the 2nd counselor in the YM and to get to work with the great group of boys that are in my ward! We have a camp out this weekend. So, the Scout Master (never before in scouts as a boy or adult) and I will be braving our first overnighter with these boys this weekend. I have a hunch that it might be very interesting!

Last night we met at the bowery at our church and gutted the scout trailer and threw away a lot of stuff! We then organized the salvageable items and organized it. Then, we made a huge fire in the bowery fireplace and roasted hot dogs. One boy brought cans of pepsi for everyone. The other boys let him have it for bringing "caffeine". This boy is one of those that knows just how to push your button(s) yet has a real talent for laughing just right and being just goofy enough to prevent you from killing him and even to start laughing yourself. My little brother Roy was expert at that.

Well, to give you a glimpse at what I am in for with this calling I will describe the events that unflolded after eating. I was summoned from the trailer to "check" on the fire. As I approached it I should have clued in by noticing the boys backing up, but didn't. I hadn't stood there 30 seconds when there was an explosion. To be honest, it made me jump back. But, not before the boiling pepsi soda sprayed me with syrup and ash. By now the boys were laughing and running for their lives. So, I gathered my wits and then marched straight toward the boys while acting as upset as I could. I was really laughing inside but didn't want them to know it. So, just before reaching the boy that planted the cola bomb I started to laugh myself. But, that didn't stop me from throwing him over my shoulder and carrying him to the grass so I could hold him down while the other boys thumped him for me. It was a great bonding moment.

Now, here is the scary aspect of it all for me. I was totally set up. They did it all so they could capture it on their cell phone camcorder. As it unfolded the mastermind little demon was actually filming it. It was somewhat like watching a documentary of a hunter stocking it's prey... speaking in whispers so as to not startle, etc.

So, if you end up seeing a clip on YouTube don't be too suprised. I won't!

Cough please...

Ok, having insurance for the first time in many years is a huge blessing and I feel very fortunate. There is a great sense of security in having it. So as to not waste it, especially where I haven't been feeling well, I decided it was time for me to check under the hood for frayed belts, split hoses, faulty spark plugs or low fluid levels.

So, I did it! I went in for a "full" check-up. A very nice doctor and thankfully extremely professional. However, no level of professionalism could make THAT experience a comfortable and enjoyable one.

I am sorry but hospital gowns flat out are not modest or comfortable! No matter how you try to tie that danged thing it leaves HUGE voids in coverage. And what is up with having you sit down on the table with such voids? That partial strip of paper does not cover the entire table cushion! So, what do they do to properly clean and sanitize that portion of vinyl that is still exposed to... well... enough said. Personally, I don't think pulling 6 more feet of paper out and discarding the old is quite enough!

Anyway, I remember being absolutely terrified when I was a young man about that part of the process when the doc stood to the side of you while applying pressure in a particularly uncomfortable location while asking you to turn your head and cough. Then, onto the other side and in 10 seconds the unpleasant experience was over. The doc would then ask you about something manly like the sport you were going to play in that prompted the physical or hunting and killing something. Handled properly both the doctor and patient could move past the awkward moment and act as if it had never happened.

Well, times have changed! And I was not included in the voting. For that matter, I think it was all women who voted! The first 10 minutes went great except for my blood pressure test (143). I even got a steroid shot for my allergies that should help tremendously. But, then my every nightmare came roaring to life in full color. My doc sits down and instructs me to stand in front of and face him. He then lifted my gown. I watched for evidence that he was holding back from laughing and thankfully didn't find any. I had many thoughts surge through my mind. But, one of them wasn't that it was MY responsibility to hold the gown in a suspended position. So, I had to be instructed making me feel really dumb in addition to feeling totally stripped of all "coolness". I obeyed and might I add did a superb job. NOT A COOL MOMENT! I missed the good old days without a doubt. But, the good news is I did not have a hernia.

Then, I was instructed to lay down on the table. I grew intensely uncomfortable as I was given further instruction. "Please turn onto your left side and pull your knees up into your chest. This would not be comfortable to do fully clothed! I will skip the details of the next 30 seconds except to say that I would rather walk across broken glass... check that... I would rather crawl on all fours across a football field of broken glass while chewing a mouthful. The good news is I have a very healthy prostate! Those billboards didn't say anything about having to do that more than once if you are older than 40 just that you should do it! I consider my duty fulfilled for life.

So, in the next few weeks I have to fulfill his instructions. I will have my throat stretched to correct my narrowing which causes my choking. I will take medication for my extreme heartburn and reflux. I will also do a treadmill test, EKG and blood work. For all of this it will only be around $4,000 so I am thankful for a reasonable co-pay and deductible.

Here's to good health. And to all of my male relatives and friends... if I can do it so can you! And let me give you a little advice for when you do... do not, absolutely, do not ask your wife for sympathy and understanding! She sees your pathetic inferior experience very insignificant compared to what she has endured!

Where in the world are Mike & Wendy...

DISNEY "WORLD" - ORLANDO, FLORIDA!

Wendy and I left Tuesday really early in the morning to catch our flight "direct" to Orlando. We got to the airport 1 hour early which has always been enough time (to spare). But, not yesterday! We stood in line as the personality challenged Delta employees assisted highly anxious passengers. We were actually 3rd in line behind an older couple doing all they could to either avoid the swine flue or stimulate the medical mask industry and 2 serious marines that you could have bounced a quarter off from (including their clinched facial muscles).

There were at least 12 stations of which 3 had employees manning them. One older lady kept walking the entire length of the 12 stations fiddling with this and fiddling with that. I kept watching her as the other 3 employees "s l o w l y" tried to prI pocess the 3 "groups" of international passengers. To the best of my ability to determine ethnicity I believe one group was going to Korea, another to Italy and the last to somewhere in the middle east. I have only seen that much luggage in 1 place before - the baggage claim merry-go-round. To process all the baggage would have been time consuming enough but then each group had to have each and every person in it ask questions in their tortured english. For being an international airport I found it curious that the only Delta employee that appeared international was the lady from Mexico that ended up finally helping me. Check that... there were the 2 Somolian baggage employees that sat on the edge of the conveyor speaking Somalian and laughing for the entire hour I was in line. At least they aren't pirates. Maybe that is what they were talking about.

So, we finally get our turn. They lady doesn't even attempt to use cordiality. She went straight to "I am in charge and nothing you do or say will change my mind and becoming aggitated will only slow me down so choose wisely..."

I chose. Not what I wanted but what I decided would best help our situation. I was nice. And hey, it paid off. Instead of paying the normal $100 per person addition for re-booking we ended up getting one heck of a deal... half off. And to further reward my kindness she booked us on an emergency row. With my long legs that is a bigger perk than you might think! So, we found our lost selves once again found. After only a 2 hour delay we caught our flight which instead of going directly to Florida gave us the added bonus of landing in Atlanta (Hi Em and Shawn) for a 1 hour lay-0ver. I spent 45 minutes of that time standing in line to "correct" the mess that my mexican aid had created. I guess her generousity of discounting my price caused a computer glitch that rejected my tickets. Oh, and by the way, a new thing with Delta is that NO bags are included in the flight you have to pay $15 for each.

After standing in line waiting for my turn with the 1 Delta employee working in Atlanta I was finally getting close to my turn with only a very nice older gentleman from Japan in front of me when a surfer dude about 5'2" with moppy hair came up and stood next to the Japanese man as if the "empty" station next to the guy helping everyone else had someone standing at it. I watched as the nice older Japanese gentleman progressively overcame his reserved nature to finally tap the kid on the shoulder, turn and point at the 20 people in line and say "Line" in a very heavy oriental accent. It did the trick. I smiled at the Japanese man that appeared embarrased at what he had done and glared "down" at the surfer dude as he passed because he hadn't made an error - his lame attempt at cutting in was foiled by Japanese superiority.

We finally boarded the plane. We had the emergency seats due to my successful "be nice" approach with the latest Delta employee. And better yet, the ones that are between 1st class and 2nd class so we not only had leg room we got to sit directly in front of the Delta employee as they sat in their seat facing the 2nd class passengers. I have a question. Why is it that as a passenger I get a seat strap that was outdated even in my parents 1972 Buick stationwagon and the Delta employee gets an Indy Car style strap system? If I didn't know better his jumper seat might have had an eject buttom and built in parachute. I didn't hold it against him and thankfully. He was quite the enjoyable individual. As he sat down we smiled at him and he said, "you didn't know you were going to be entertained on this flight did you?" He then said, "I am the singing steward" (joking). Well, the ice was broke and we proceeded to have a great conversation the rest of the trip. His name is Sam. He was adopted in Taiwan by an American soldier during the war when he was 8. He has a girlfriend from the Philippines and goes there every month. There was our angle. "Have you heard of Mormons?" Our daughter is a missionary in the Philippines. We then discussed many things about mormons and missionaries and the benefits the service will have on their lives and others. I witnessed to him about "true happiness" being found in recognizing the importance of our relationship with Christ and the importance of family. He told me that he let 2 young men into his home years ago and they were very nice. We had a wonderful visit and I believe he came away with a positive opinion and outlook as to Mormons and missionaries. I hope the next time he lets the missionaries into his home he listens a little closer and catches the message of true happiness.

So, after all is said and done I thank my Mexican Delta employee's short and direct help in arranging our new flight.

Wendy and I landed safely in Orlando and checked into a beautiful hotel with a room that has a patio setting just feet from the bay. We are going to have a wonderful time here and feel very blessed in a world of chaos to be able to enjoy such serenity and beauty. I thank my employers for sending me to this convention. My last boss would never have been so generous!

A life saved

My sister Julie and her husband adopted Adam after years of trying to have a biological child. He is a unique and great kid. He is almost 8 years old and will be baptized in a few months. They then decided to adopt a little brother for Adam. After almost 2 years of waiting they finally were able to fly down and pick up Noah. Noah was born in Haiti and the prospect of a quality or long life was not likely in his future until they did! Yesterday, Noah was sealed to them in the Salt Lake Temple. His mortal life was enhanced greatly a year ago when they picked him up. His eternal life was blessed greatly yesterday when he was sealed to his loving father and mother.
We love you Noah and are glad you are part of our family!

Some interesting facts about Haiti that might let you realize just how significant the adoption of Noah is.

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, with 80% of the population living under the poverty line and 54% in abject poverty.

Population: 9,035,536
Estimates for this country explicitly take into account the effects of excess mortality due to AIDS; this can result in lower life expectancy, higher infant mortality, higher death rates, lower population growth rates, and changes in the distribution of population by age and sex than would otherwise be expected (July 2009 est.)

Life expectancy at birth for males: 59 years

Religion: Roman Catholic 80%, Protestant 16% (Baptist 10%, Pentecostal 4%, Adventist 1%, other 1%), none 1%, other 3%
note: roughly half of the population practices voodoo

Only 52.9% of the adult population can read and write

More than 2/3 of the adult population are unemployed

Americans are warned not to travel to Haiti and if they do to be extremely cautious.

Enough voting...

Well, at least now I know why nobody was posting. I personally believe that it was safe. Google Blog can't risk not providing security and dependability for the site or it would destroy them. But, everyone will feel much more confident once it is the Church website Scott told us about so we will wait for that. Thanks Scott.

Until then, please send your information to my email (mike@kloepfer.com). I will make a hard copy and laminate it for each person and will have them available at the reunion. I will be auctioning them off so we can afford to come so bring your change :)

We will be there for sure at least Friday and Saturday.

Email by the end of May please:

Vote

It seems that some think that the information is too sensitive and that the site is not secure enough. I assumed the way it is set up that it is safe. Unless, of course, the site can be penetrated even with permissions set to authors only. It is obvious by trying to view the site that you can't read anything unless you know the password.

So, I am putting it to a vote. Please weigh in. "Yes" to keep the site "No" to remove it. No explanation necessary.

Thank you Emily for your efforts. If in fact it is such that we decide to keep it I would appreciate you going in and "inviting" each of your siblings.

Simplified? I hope.

To go to the Anderson Family blog click the following link: www.raydandersonfamily.blogspot.com

Once you do it should take you to a screen that prompts you for your user name; enter: raydandersonfamily@gmail.com

It should also prompt you for the password; this is where it gets tricky - the password is Bonnie's maiden last name with the numeric value representative of how many people are in Ray and Bonnies immediate family. So, assuming her last name was smith and they had 5 kids you would put "smith7" as the password. Now, just figure out what it would actually be and enter it. Once you do you should be on the site and can enter your family.

If you still have problems accessing the site please email me: mike@kloepfer.com

Now, get er done.

High tech version to fulfill Dad's request

Hi.

I was asked by Dad a year ago to make another family address sheet like I did a decade ago.

I would like to improve on that and so I made a blog for our family. I have already entered my family so now you need to go and do so with yours.

The blog site is: raydandersonfamily.blogspot.com

The username is raydandersonfamily@gmail.com

The password is Bonnie's maiden last name with the numeric represention of the total number of people in Ray and Bonnie's immediate family.

So, if the last name was smith and there were 13 children the password would be: smith15

Now, each of you go and enter your post so that every family member is accounted for. Please share this with all siblings!

I have made it so that only the author can view this site. I have tested and it appears to be protected and safe. If any of you know of any weaknesses to the security of the site please let me know.

Someone please make sure you let dad and mom know.

All you talented bloggers feel free to modify the site to make it amazing. I have protected the site so that only the author can use it and therefore, it cannot be seen by outsiders. Please be extremely careful not to divulge the password to anyone outside of the family.

One of my sisters needs to do this for the Landrum side... hint hint.

Pay day...

OK, today was one of those pay day kinda days.

Much like when I was in my early 20's and had the priviledge of being scout master to some great boys for almost 2 years. Then, as the years went by one by one they invited me to their eagle court of honors. Then, I received a high school graduation announcement. Then, I was notified when they went on missions. Then, I was invited to their weddings. All pay days.

Earlier today I received a phone call from a new friend. We have known each other just over a year. However, we became very close in a short time. I had the priviledge of serving him and his wife.

Most of you are probably aware of the amazing opportunity I had to help a family add on and remodel their home. She was diagnosed with stage 4 skin cancer. Upon being asked to provide a quote to do the work I instantly knew what I wanted to do. In so doing I witnessed hundreds of people selflessly provide their service and love. I too was the beneficiary of this in that it made me have hope in difficult times and to lose myself in their cause making my own challenges at the time seem much smaller.

One of the amazing blessings of the experience was to be available to my new friends to talk about Christ, eternal life and true happiness. To answer difficult questions. To share life lessons. To testify. To cry together. To smile together.

She had been a member her whole life but went inactive in high school. He was baptized but never went to church. They both lived lives with regrets. Don't we all. Her illness awoke a desire in her to be close to God and to have an eternal family. To marry her husband in the Temple and to have her 2 daughters sealed to her. She opened up to me and shared a deep desire to clear up mistakes in her life so she would be worthy. But, she was embarrassed and scared. She feared what her Bishop would think of her.

I had specific thoughts enter my mind to help her and so I spoke. In essence this is what was said, "What words come to mind as you think of Christ and his feelings about you?". She answered, "Love, hope, sacrifice, happiness, forgiveness, salvation". I said, "Exactly". Now, what words come to mind when you think of Satan?" She said, "Sin, evil, sadness, despair, hell". I said, "Exactly".

Now, who do you think is the author of the negative words embarrassed and scared? Does Christ want you to feel those negative emotions? Of course not. He is cheering you on. He suffered so that you can be free of suffering. She and I both cried. I told her that her Bishop would not think badly of her. He would come to admire her on a higher level and would do everything in his power to help her. I told her that upon resolving the things that have drug her down for so many years she would feel a huge sense of relief and hope. Much like a great load being lifted from her shoulders.

That night I received a phone call from a very excited and happy young woman. She said, "Never guess where I have been! My husband and I both went and talked with the Bishop and cleared up everything!". She was right. I wouldn't have guessed. After I left that morning the spirit really worked on her. She knew she couldn't let another day go by. From that moment on their lives have been blessed.

As we built the addition I had multiple amazing visits with her husband and was able to answer questions as well as testify to him. The spirit was always very strong. They are GREAT people. Their oldest little girl was baptized a month later. She wanted her daddy to talk on baptism. He was scared to death. However, his wife and I helped him and he prepared and delivered an amazing talk. My family and I were blessed to be there for the baptism. Multiple family members told me that they would never have believed that he would come to church let alone give a talk.

In her last trip to Mexico a few months ago for Stem Cell treatment she was diagnosed cancer free! From stage 4 to cancer free! The Lord is actively blessing them in their lives. They know that He is.

Today I received a phone call from my friend. He told me that in May he and his family will be sealed for time and all eternity and that he would love for my wife and I to be there.

I consider myself paid in full and then some. A nice pay day to be sure.

open the windows

Over 6 billion currently live on the earth.

Over 13 million are members of the restored church.

I don't know exactly how many are spiritually improving and are trying to develop and grow. Not enough.

A very small percentage of God's children have the necessary knowledge and are actively progressing toward returning to him.

Is it any wonder that he is eager to open the windows of heaven to pour out blessings with even the slightest effort we make.

He is without doubt cheering us on. He is without doubt pleased with any effort we make to gain self mastery. He loves us.

We don't have to be perfect. We have to be trying.

I am glad to have that knowledge.

He hates you...

Beyond any hate you and I can comprehend each of us have a common enemy that thoroughly despises us. So much in fact that their entire existence is dedicated to refining their techniques and skills to be utilized in an attempt to destroy us.

Satan and 1/3 of the hosts of heaven failed to win their evil purposes in the war in Heaven. They were cast out. They became embittered and resolute in their cause to destroy. Their efforts were in full force even during the war in heaven. They have not let up in the least since being cast out. They long ago waged a new war. There have been numerous casualties. They have sadly had continual success in their evil plot to destroy.

They began by attacking Adam and Eve, with success. They have studied mankind from that time forth. They have learned of weaknesses in human nature all along. They have practiced and refined their tactics and manipulation ever since. Generation after generation they have learned and have grown stronger and much more capable. The duration of time that they have had to plan, practice and prepare has allowed them to become a very fierce enemy that warrants being feared. They practiced on your grandparents, your parents and now they are unleashing their arsenal of tactics directly on you.

Is it any wonder they find success. Considering these facts, is it not more clear why we are warned to "avoid the very appearance of evil"? Therefore, is it not time to remove any and all weakness or sin from our lives? How critical it is to utilize the cleansing ability of the sacrament each week!

Is it not true that they know exactly what works individually on each of us? I believe each of us has 1 specific weakness that they exploit. One specific area where they find the most success. It is different for each of us yet they know how to find it! Once found, they SLOWLY work on getting us to give up control so that they can eventually gain a choke hold capable of spiritually suffocating us.

With as scary as this all might seem we are not left without hope. As powerful as Satan and his followers appear to be they have absolutely NO POWER over us unless we allow them to. Through the power of the atonement and the influence of the Holy Ghost we in fact have MORE POWER than they ever will. Much more.

They know where the line is. We know where the line is. We must not cross it. In fact, we must stay safely far enough away from the line so that if we happen to trip we don't find ourselves entirely on the other side.

In conclusion I would like to share a story that President Kimball related:

“There is an oft-told story of three men who applied for the job of driving the coaches for a transportation company. The successful applicant would be driving over high, dangerous and precipitous mountain roads. Asked how well he could drive, the first one replied: ‘I am a good, experienced driver. I can drive so close to the edge of the precipice that the wide metal tire of the vehicle will skirt the edge and never go off.’

“ ‘That is good driving,’ said the employer.

“The second man boasted, ‘Oh, I can do better than that. I can drive so accurately that the tire of the vehicle will lap over, half of the tire on the edge of the precipice, and the other half in the air over the edge.’

“The employer wondered what the third man could offer, and was surprised and pleased to hear, ‘Well, sir, I can keep just as far away from the edge as possible.’ It is needless to ask which of the men got the job” (Spencer W. Kimball, The Miracle of Forgiveness [1969], 217–18).

May we each have the wisdom and strength to refrain from flirting with destruction by staying safely clear of the edge.

Do not let him win the smallest battle let alone the war.

I know that with divine help we can find success. In Jesus Christ's name I testify to that fact.

Mike

Of great significance...

As Jacob was being taught about the pure in heart he was told that his enemies, the Lamanites, were actually more righteous than the Nephites. He was told that because the Lamanites obeyed one key commandment in spite of their wickedness that "The Lord would not destroy them, but will be merciful unto them" (Jacob 3:6).

What was this commandment? What redeeming quality could allow us hope in spite of other weaknesses and struggles?

"Behold, their husbands love thier wives, and their wives love their husbands; and their husbands and their wives love their children".

If success in this one area despite weakness in others allows mercy then it must be extremely significant. As I contemplated this scripture I couldn't help but picture each of Wendy's sisters and her brother as well as my own siblings one by one. I rejoice in the fact that in this one area for sure our family is overall very successful and therefore, very blessed. I am thankful for each of your examples in this area.

I love my wife. I love my children. I love my extended family. This is one area where I am thankful that I do not struggle. On this Easter morning I rejoice not only in the fact that I am blessed with a great family but that due to my Savior I can be with them eternally.

Happy Easter.
