Get this. It wasn't enough to have the Klamath river (not great for swimming) or Indian creek, Elk Creek or multiple others within a few miles drive. Happy Camp decided to create a summer swimming pool for kids. I have to admit I actually enjoyed going simply because every kid in town was there.
How it worked. At the mouth of Elk creek (where it dumped into the Klamath) heavy equipment dug a huge hole in the ground. Then, once large enough, they went upstream and cut in a trench to allow water to flow into the hole and create a big pool. The material was very sandy so the pool was basically surrounded by a beach like setting. Can sand ever get HOT after 95 degree sun bakes it for hours! Ooo, ahhh, ouch, #*&%@..... ahhhhhh (The sound you hear as a 12 year old boy runs across the sand and finally reaches the soothing cool water).
Something that I have not seen since (which suprises me due to how fun) is a homemade water sport game the older kids would do. They would sew 2 sheets together but keeping 1 end open.
Then, if you took and held it propertly above your head it would fill full of air as you ran toward the water. Done properly you would have a great big pillow like cushion of air and as you flipped it at the last second folding the end to trap the air you could flop onto it and scoot out aross the water. I was able to do it somewhat but some of the older boys really had the technique down and made it look WAY fun. At the end of the ride you would let go and the air would deflate.
Then, we would go and eat blackberries. Oh, the memories.

Holy cow! I knew that homemade swimming pool wasn't only in my imagination! I somewhat remember a smaller, more shallow area next to it where someone taught me how to swim? Did they do lessons there?
I remember that sound running down the sand at all the swimming holes. We'd throw our towels down, step on it, then do it again. Man, that was HOT!!!!!! And DANG the water was freezing! My kids would probably never get in such an ice cold body of water. They're missin' out.
Mmmm, blackberries!
uhh the title scared me at first. i was concerned
